The AQ women's volleyball team dropped both of its matches on Saturday (Aug. 28) to finish off the weekend 1-3. The Saints started off the day winning the first set in their match against Campbellsville. However, the next six sets did not go as well, getting topped by Campbellsville 3-1 and IU-South Bend 3-0.
There were a lot of talented teams that played in the Crosstown Showdown. At the time of writing this recap, the four teams that AQ faced off against (Bethel, Campbellsville, IU-South Bend, and Mount Mercy) had an accumulative record of 18-8.
In the 11:00 AM game, Aquinas took the lead early, winning the first set by a score of 25-20. The rally began for Tigers in the second set and didn't end until the game ended 3-1 in favor of Campbellsville, by scores of 20-25, 11-25, and 21-25.
The Tigers beat out the Saints in most statistical categories, assisting the Tigers in their victory campaign. Campbellsville led in kills (49-43), hitting percentage (.200-.114), aces (5-4), and digs (69-62). The Saints squad led in assists (42-41) and blocks (9-4).
Abbi Perkins had another good game with 11 kills (.348), three and a half blocks and a couple of digs.
Cassie Sustrich picked up from where she left off at setter last week, with a solid 35 assists in four sets.
Adrien Yondo and
Kenzi Dobosiewicz played well from the back line with 12 and 15 digs respectively.
During the 2:00 matchup, the Saints weren't able to stop the run by IU-South Bend. The Titans took three straight sets by scores of 25-21, 25-20, and 25-23.
Chloe Mitchell played a well-rounded game, with 15 assists and 14 digs. Perkins was the team-leader in kills for the second straight match with ten kills (.400) and five block assists.
Aquinas is back in action again this upcoming Wednesday (September 1) at Grace Christian University.
