The #14 Aquinas women's soccer team continued its winning ways in a convincing 10-1 win against IU-Kokomo on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 11). The 2021 home opener took place at the AQ Athletic Field as the non-conference match-up saw six different Saints score a goal against the Cougars.
AQ scored five goals in both halves and did not allow a shot in the first to help boost the win streak to four games, improving its record to 4-0 as IU-Kokomo's record dropped to 0-3-1.
Macy Hollingsworth got the scoring started in the ninth minute as she took a pass from
Ariana Garcia in the box to beat the goalkeeper for her first goal of the season.
Jenna Konwerski followed up with the second goal for the Saints in the 17th minute, taking another pass from Garcia and scoring her first goal of the season from just outside the box. The third goal of the game came off the foot of
Sydney Shenk for her team-leading third goal of the season in the 19th minute with Garcia again netting the assist. Hollingsworth garnered her second goal of the match in the 20th minute, scoring just under the crossbar after taking the pass from Shenk. The final goal of the first half came in the 28th minute as Garcia added a goal to her three assist in the first 45 minutes. This was Garcia's second goal of the season with the assist going to
Laia Cunill.
The Cougars came out and scored their first and only goal in the match as
Tairyn Webb made the initial save on a breakaway, but Gabriela Jaimes put away the rebound in the 49th minute. AQ's sixth goal came on an own goal by IU-Kokomo in the 50th minute to push the lead back to five. Garcia followed up her big first half with her second goal of the game and third of the season in the 56th minute with the assist coming of the pass from
Hannah Crum. Hollingsworth completed the hat trick in the 59th minute, scoring an unassisted goal after a Cougar turnover.
Emily Olsen got on the board in the 64th minute, netting her first collegiate goal off a pass from Shenk. The last goal of the game came off the foot of Cunill for her first goal of the season with Garcia collecting her fourth assist of the day.
Webb (2-0) recorded six saves in the home win and allowed one goal, while Erica Bolinger (0-3-1) took the loss after making six saves and allowing five goals for the Cougars. Alicia Burns played the second half for IU-Kokomo and made one save, while allowing five goals.
The Saints took 23 shots in the first half alone and added another 13 in the second half for a total of 36 with 17 being on target, compared to the eight total from the Cougars (all coming in the second half) with only one being off target. AQ had 16 attempts at a corner kick to IU-Kokomo's two, while Aquinas committed seven fouls to the Cougars' nine plus three yellow cards.
Aquinas will head back on the road on Wednesday, Sept. 15 by traveling to Mount Vernon, Ohio to take on Mount Vernon Nazarene, with kick-off scheduled for 6:00 PM.
