The #14 Aquinas women's soccer team kept the win streak going in the 5-1 win over Mount Vernon Nazarene on Wednesday evening (Sept. 15). The Saints went on the road to Mount Vernon, Ohio and improved their road record to 4-0 in the convincing non-conference victory.
AQ got a hat trick as
Hannah Crum does it for the sixth time in her career and it was the second game in a row that a Saints player scored three goals in a game. Aquinas improved its record to 5-0 as Mount Vernon Nazarene's record dropped to 2-3.
Laia Cunill opened the scoring for the Saints in the 24th minute after taking a pass from
Macy Hollingsworth and putting her second goal of the season in the back of the net. Crum scored the eventual game-winning goal unassisted in the 29th minute to double the Saints' advantage to 2-0. Aquinas took the 2-0 lead into halftime after outshooting the Cougars 13-2 in the first frame with eight of the shots being on target.
Merin McDermott was the benefactor of a Crum pass in the 57th minute of the second half to score her second goal of the season and extend the lead to 3-0. Crum then scored in the 66th and 72nd minutes for her second and third goals of the season, with the first one being assisted by
Ariana Garcia and the second unassisted off a free kick. The Cougars were able to break up the shutout with a goal in the 79th minute, scored by Caitlin Erlandson to make to final score 5-1.
Tairyn Webb (3-0) stayed perfect on the season by recording four saves in the road win and allowed one goal. Lilly Jakuszewski (2-3) took the loss after making seven saves and allowing five goals for the Cougars.
The Saints took 20 total shots with 12 being on target, while the Cougars finished with eight shots on the night with five being on target. AQ had four attempts at a corner kick compared to Mount Vernon's five, while Aquinas committed eight fouls to the Cougars' nine.
Aquinas will next face #7 Marian at the AQ Athletic Field for homecoming weekend on Saturday (Sept. 18), with kick-off scheduled for 4:00 PM.
