The AQ women's volleyball squad dropped its first match of homecoming weekend today (Sept. 18) at Sturrus Center. The Saints split the first two sets but couldn't keep the rally going, eventually falling to Indiana Tech 3-1.
AQ entered the match with a record of 9-6 after falling to rival cornerstone on Wednesday (Sept. 15). The Saints are now 1-2 in WHAC conference play after the final match score of 19-25, 25-21, 19-25, and 21-25.
The first three sets had plenty of back-and-forth action. The line score remained within four points of each team for the first 15 points in all four sets, before one of the teams finally managed to break away.
Aquinas trailed Indiana Tech in most statistical categories, trailing in kills (49-55), assists (47-49), aces (3-7), digs (48-58), and blocks (6.5-9.0). The statistical disadvantage was too much for the Saints to overcome.
Jackie Rozell and
Abbie Harpenau had a team-high 11 kills in four sets. The pair also contributed 18 digs and four block assists.
Abbi Perkins and
Emily Jones had the second-most kills on the team with eight. Harpenau and Perkins had fantastic hitting percentages of .429 and .400 respectively.
Chloe Mitchell had another great match with 45 assists, good for 11.25 assists per set. Mitchell also provided the squad with two kills, four digs, and a block assist.
Rozell is now at 999 career kills, just one kill away from her 1,000th kill.
AQ will play its second match of the weekend against the UNOH Racers tomorrow (Sept. 19) at 1:00 PM in the Sturrus Center.
