The #14 Aquinas women's soccer team quickly got back to its winning ways after taking down Saint Xavier on Monday evening (Sept. 20). The make-up game from earlier in the season was played the AQ Athletic Field and saw the Saints use four first half goals to take down the Cougars by a 4-0 score.
Aquinas' record improves to 6-1 on the season and now have a 2-1 home record, while Saint Xavier's record now stands at 0-7.
All four of the Saints' goals came in the first half with
Hannah Crum netting the eventual game winning goal just 1:19 into the game for her fifth of the season.
Laia Cunill sent in a cross to the box going from right to left as Crum followed up her WHAC Offensive Player of the Week performance with an early goal this week. The second goal was scored in the 27th minute as
Ingrid Hentemann collected a
Katelyn Kahael cross that deflected off the goalkeeper and scored her first collegiate goal.
Candela Vigil-Escalera scored her first goal of the season in the 32nd minute after
Emma Gould sent a ball through the Cougars' back line from midfield and Vigil-Escalera won the race to the ball to put it in the back of the net. The last goal of the half and of the game came just before halftime in the 44th minute when Hentemann struck for her second goal of the game and of the season off a through ball from
Jenna Konwerski.
Aquinas took 16 more shots in the second half, but could not widen the margin. Saint Xavier took its one and only shot of the game in the second half as
Braeleigh McCoy stopped a breakaway attempt.
Tairyn Webb (4-1) played the first half, but did not see a single shot from the Cougars. McCoy and
Maddi Vick split the second half duties to preserve the combined shutout. Morgan Demagall took the loss in net for SXU after collecting four saves and allowing four goals.
The Saints took 31 total shots with eight being on target and another for shots either hit the post or crossbar, while the Cougars finished with their only shot attempt being on goal. AQ had 12 attempts at a corner kick and did not let SXU even get an attempt, while Aquinas committed three fouls to the Cougars' one.
Aquinas will begin WHAC play it hosts Cleary on Saturday (Sept. 25) at the AQ Athletic Field, with kick-off scheduled for 3:00 PM.
