The #14 Aquinas women's soccer team secured a big WHAC rivalry win over Cornerstone on Tuesday evening (Sept. 28). Traveling to the CU Soccer Field, the Saints took a three goal lead into halftime and scored one more in the second half to cruise by the Golden Eagles 4-0.
Aquinas' overall record improves to 8-1-0 on the season with a perfect 5-0-0 road record plus a 2-0-0 WHAC record, while Cornerstone's record now stands at 2-3-1 overall and 0-2-0 in the WHAC.
The scoring was led by
Hannah Crum who scored her team leading seventh goal in the ninth minute to give AQ the 1-0 lead. Crum converted on a penalty kick after CU committed a foul in the box to gain her second game winning goal of the season.
Sydney Shenk was able to double the Saints' advantage in the 13th minute for her sixth goal of the 2021 campaign. The pass came from
Tairyn Webb in the opposite box as Shenk avoided the opposing goalkeeper for the goal. Cornerstone scored a self-inflicted own goal in the 38th minute to give Aquinas the 3-0 lead heading into the break.
The lone goal in the second half came off the head of
Merin McDermott in the 80th minute off a converted corner kick. Shenk sent the ball into the box and collected her third point of the night as McDermott scored her third goal of the year.
Webb (6-1) gained her first solo shutout of the season after being apart of two combined shutouts the two previous games, while collecting one save to go along with her first career assist. Hope Steenwyk took the loss in net for CU after collecting two saves and allowing three goals in the first half with Samantha Sebright coming on for support in for the second half and saving four shots to go along with the one goal allowed.
The Saints took 18 total shots with 11 being on target, while the Golden Eagles finished with their only shot attempt being on goal from the first half. AQ had 11 attempts at a corner kick and did not let CU have an opportunity for one, while Aquinas committed five fouls to the Golden Eagles' nine.
Aquinas will continue WHAC play by traveling to Fort Wayne, Indiana to face Indiana Tech on Saturday (Oct. 2) at the Warrior Athletic Field, with kick-off scheduled for 3:00 PM.
