#15 Aquinas Takes Down Campbellsville 2-1

Sydeny Shenk secures the win by scoring both goals for the Saints

The #15 Aquinas women's soccer team held on to defeat Campbellsville in a thrilling game on Friday evening (Sept. 3). The non-conference contest was played at the Citizens Bank Field in Campbellsville, Kentucky as the Saints come up with the victory over the Tigers, 2-1.

AQ was able to score eight minutes into the game off the foot of Sydney Shenk. After intercepting a CU throw in, Hannah Crum shot a pass up the left sideline to Shenk, who took one touch around the Tiger goalkeeper and scored in the wide open net. The Saints were able to double their advantage in the 15th minute with Shenk scoring her second goal of the night and of the season. Macy Hollingsworth was able to feed Shenk in the box as the shot rifled off the goalkeepers' hands and into the net.

Aquinas was able to get six shots off in the first half with the two goals coming from the only two shots on frame. Campbellsville recorded five shots in the first 45 minutes with four being saved by AQ goalkeepers.

The Tigers cut into the deficit in the second half as Lina Berrah scored in the 54th minute. Tairyn Webb, who came into net during the first half, made save after save in the second half to preserve the one goal advantage for the Saints. Breanna Probst also made a bicycle kick save in the 86th minute to help Aquinas seal the victory.

Braeleigh McCoy did improve her record to 2-0 and made two saves, but had to exit the pitch midway through the first half. Webb came in for support and made nine saves, while allowing one goal. Riley Thompson made the start for the Tigers as her record drops to 1-1 after allowing two goals and making two saves.

The Saints were outshot by Campbellsville 20-11 for the game with CU also holding a 14-4 advantage for shots on net. The Tigers took eight corner kicks to the Saints' three in the contest, while Aquinas committed nine fouls to the Tigers' 10.

The win improves Aquinas' record to 2-0, while Campbellsville drops its record to 1-1 after defeating Roosevelt in its first game.

Aquinas will be back in action on Sunday, Sept. 5 for its third straight road game to begin the season against Cumberland at Kirk Field in Lebanon, Tennessee, with kick-off scheduled for 2:00 PM.
