#15 Aquinas Wins Top-25 Battle over #20 Cumberland

Ariana Garcia nets the game winning goal and Hannah Crum scores her first of the season in the 2-1 win

The #15 Aquinas women's soccer team gets its first top-25 win of the season and stays undefeated after taking down #20 Cumberland on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 5). The non-conference contest was played at Kirk Field in Lebanon, Tennessee as the Saints gain their third win to open the 2021 season over the Phoenix, 2-1.

AQ used two first half goals for the second game in a row to defeat Cumberland. The Saints have gone on the road for the first three games this season and will come back to campus 3-0 for their home opener next week.

Aquinas struck quickly in the third minute of the game as Hannah Crum scored her first goal of the season. Avery Tack was awarded an assist on the goal to help the Saints take the 1-0 advantage. Ariana Garcia took it upon herself to score the second goal of the game, and the eventual game winner, in the 14th minute as she capitalized on a free kick for her first goal of the season.

After not as many shots on Friday, the Saints came out aggressive in the first half with 12 shots against CU, seven being on goal. Cumberland recorded eight shots in the first 45 minutes with all three on goal being stopped by Tairyn Webb.

The Phoenix got on the board in the 69th minute of the second half to shrink the Saints lead down to one. That would be the closet that CU got as Webb made another six saves to help secure the one goal win.

Webb (1-0) recorded her first win of the season as she totaled nine saves and allowed one goal. Sabrina Graziano made the start for Cumberland as her record drops to 1-1 after allowing two goals and making six saves.

The Saints were outshot by Cumberland 22-17 for the game with CU also holding a 10-8 advantage for shots on net. AQ had five attempts at a corner kick compared to Cumberlands' four, while Aquinas committed 13 fouls to the Phoenix's 12.

The win improves Aquinas' record to 3-0, while Cumberland drops its record to 1-1 after defeating Tennessee Wesleyan in its first game.

Aquinas will be back in action on Saturday, Sept. 11 for its home opener against IU-Kokomo at the AQ Athletic Field, with kick-off scheduled for 1:00 PM.
