Mason Stewart Picks Up a Pair of Goals in 7-3 Win Over #24 LTU

The Saints earn a much-needed conference win to improve to 10-4 in conference play.

The AQ men's hockey team took to the road to take on the Lawrence Tech Blue Devils yesterday (Jan. 14) for the second series of the season. AQ came into the Southfield Sports Center and came out with a 7-3 win. Multiple Saints contributed multiple points in the winning effort, giving Aquinas an important win against the #24 Blue Devils.

Lawrence Tech jumped out to an early lead, scoring just 19 seconds into the first period. After some back-and-forth defensive action throughout the first period, Aquinas earned a powerplay opportunity at 8:33 in the first period. Nick Stockert capitalized on that opportunity a minute later, leveling the game at one a piece. Senior David Elford picked up his first assist of the game off that goal.

Five minutes later, Brandon Schwandt got into trouble, giving the Blue Devils a powerplay opportunity of their own. However, not only did the Saints kill off the powerplay, but Greg McQuade also scored a short-handed goal off the pass from Brandon Rozema, putting the Saints up 2-1. The Saints would score one more goal at 0:38 in the first period, providing Aquinas with a two-goal advantage heading into the first intermission. The goal was scored by team captain, Mason Stewart, and assisted by Nick Long.

The Blue Devils opened up the second period with a response of their own, scoring just 42 seconds into the second period to bring the score within one goal. However, Aquinas' big man Mike Curran would respond just 27 seconds later to expand the lead to two goals again. Curran's eighth goal of the season was assisted by Stockert and Elford.

Less than two minutes later, LTU would score again to bring the score to 4-3. Unfortunately for Lawrence Tech, that would be the last goal of the game that they would score. At 13:36 in the second period, Mason Stewart scored his second goal of the game, bringing his season-total to seven goals. The fifth goal of the game was assisted by Daniel Nelson and Rozema.

The Saints would score two more goals before the game was over, both in the third period, both scored by Elford. The first goal was assisted by Russell Shengulette and Rozema, giving Rozema a hat trick of goals. The second goal was unassisted.

Aquinas now improves to 13-5 on the season with a 10-4 WHAC conference record.

Tyler Szturm got the start in net and picked up his third win of the season. He now has a 3-2 record for the 2021-2022 season.

AQ is back on the ice tonight for its first home game of the 2022 calendar year. The Saints will be playing the Blue Devils again with a puck drop at 8:00 PM.
