Game Recap: Men's Hockey | | Cam Harper, Sports Information Graduate Assistant

Tough Night for Saints as UMD Wins 6-0

The AQ men's hockey team took on the UM-Dearborn Wolverines for their second series of the season last night (Jan. 22). Aquinas won both games of the first series and were looking for a repeat of that performance. Unfortunately, that is not how the game played out. UMD took the lead early and never let it go, winning 6-0 against the Saints.

Aquinas is now 14-6 with an 11-6 conference record.

The Saints got into penalty trouble early on in the first period. Mike Curran was called for a delay of game just 32 seconds into the game. AQ managed to kill off most of that penalty before UMD was called for a roughing call just a minute and twelve seconds later. Aquinas would get a powerplay as a result but were unable to capitalize. Nick Long would get put in the box for boarding a few minutes later, and the Wolverines capitalized this time, scoring their first of six goals. Nothing else would happen for the remainder of the first period, with the score 1-0 at the first intermission.

Both teams would get in their fair share of penalty trouble in the second period as well. However, none of the goals in the second period were scored during the powerplays. UMD would score three goals in less than two minutes early in the second period to bring the score to 4-0. The Wolverines would then score another at the start of the third period to make the score 5-0.

Both teams had more penalties in the third period, but neither team was able to capitalize off the powerplay chances. At the end of the third period, with 1:25 left to play in regulation, UM-Dearborn would score one more goal to make the total 6-0.

Michael Allman got the start in net and saved 26 of 32 shots on target. Allman is now 5-4 on the season with a .897 save percentage.

The Saints actually outshot the Wolverines, putting 37 shots on target. However, Aquinas was unable to find the back of the net as the UMD goalie played a fantastic game.

AQ is back on home ice tonight (Jan. 22) for another matchup against UMD. The puck is set to drop at 8:00 PM at Southside Ice Arena.
