Saints Fall in Overtime to GVSU in Third Matchup of Year

AQ held a lead for most of the game, but GVSU's persistence pulled them over the top in overtime.

The AQ women's hockey team played its second game of the weekend yesterday (Jan. 22) against the Grand Valley State Lakers. This is the third time the two teams have faced off this season, with GVSU taking the first two games by scores of 1-0 and 3-2. Unfortunately for Aquinas, this meeting would be the same result as GVSU once again came out victorious by one goal, winning 4-3 in overtime.

This result moves the Saints record to 6-9-2 with a 3-5-1 conference record.

The game started with an early goal for Aquinas. Gina Marzolo scored the first goal for the Saints of the 2022 calendar year, netting the shot at 13:56 in the first period. The goal was assisted by junior defender, Morgan Kozar. Just a couple minutes later, both teams had alternating powerplay, yet neither side managed to capitalize. However, the Lakers managed to level the score at 4:27 in the first period. The Lakers outshot AQ by a total of 21-8 in the first period.

The second period was interesting, as the Saints had two disallowed goals at the start of the second period. AQ was finally able to break through at the end of the period with Alyssa Exline scoring a shorthanded goal at 5:31 in the second period. This goal was Exline's fifth goal of the season. The goal was assisted by defender, Jenna Hausman. Aquinas held a 2-1 advantage heading into the second intermission, despite being outshot 25-21 in the second period.

Grand Valley tied up the score early in the third period, scoring four minutes and thirty-three seconds into the period. GVSU scored again at 6:56 in the third, taking a 3-2 lead late in the period. Two minutes later, Madison Morgrette slotted the puck into the back of the net, tying up the game at 3-3. The game-tying goal was assisted by Jenna Blackwell. AQ held the shots on target advantage in the third, outshooting GVSU 16-14 in the third as the game headed into overtime.

Unfortunately for the Saints, the Lakers scored early in overtime, winning the game at 3:07 in overtime.

Ashley Suske started in net for Aquinas, saving 56 of 60 shots on target.

Aquinas plays again today at 12:30 in a CCWHA matchup against Michigan State. The puck was set to drop at 12:30 today.
