The AQ women's hockey team took the ice for the third time this weekend this afternoon (Jan. 23). Friday's game (Jan. 21) resulted in a 0-0 tie against the University of Michigan. Yesterday's matchup (Jan. 22) resulted in a 4-3 loss in overtime against the Grand Valley State University Lakers. AQ took on Michigan State for the second time this season today, looking to avenge its 4-2 loss earlier this season on November 7th. Unfortunately for the Saints, today was the exact same result, falling 4-2 to the Spartans.
AQ now sits at 6-10-2 this year with a 3-6-1 CCWHA record.
Aquinas took an early lead in the first period, scoring within two minutes of the start of the game. Mckenna Kaczor scored her first goal of the season with the assist coming from freshman forward
Lauryn Wood. AQ would score again less than two minutes later, as fellow freshman defender
Jenna Hausman put the puck into the pack of the net to take an early 2-0 lead. The goal was assisted by
Anna Castle.
The score would remain at 2-0 in favor of Aquinas until the Spartans captain would bring one goal back, narrowing the Saints lead to just one. AQ would enter the first intermission with a 2-1 lead.
The second period was a defensive battle between the two sides. Both teams had a powerplay opportunity, but neither managed to capitalize. The score would remain 2-1 in favor of Aquinas entering the third period.
The third period was all about the Spartans, as they scored two goals within two minutes and two seconds to bring the score to 3-2. The first goal was scored at 12:19 and the second was at 10:07. The Saints had a couple of solid chances but were unable to put the puck into the net. MSU iced the game with another late goal, extending its lead to 4-2.
Kadynce Romijn got her second start of the weekend. The result brings her season record to 2-2-1.
MSU has another action-packed weekend next weekend with three games. AQ is set to take on Roosevelt on Friday (Jan. 28) at 2:45 PM at Southside Ice Arena. That matchup is followed by a home game against Adrian on Saturday, January 29th at 7:30 PM and a road game against Adrian on Sunday, January 30th at 4:00 PM.
