Grand Rapids, Mich. - The #15 Aquinas women's soccer team notched a pair of first half goals and pitched a fourth consecutive clean sheet to notch a solid 2-0 home victory over visiting Lourdes on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 15). AQ scored in the second minute of the game and added another goal before halftime and the Saints defense was stellar, allowing just one shot to the Grey Wolves.
It was the eighth straight win for Aquinas, as the Saints move to 11-2-1 overall and remain a perfect 7-0 in WHAC play. Since falling to #5 Marian on Sept. 10, AQ has outscored its opponents in the eight wins by a combined 30-1 margin. In seven WHAC games, the Saints have scored 28 goals and allowed just one tally from their opponents.
Lourdes drops to 5-3-4 overall and 3-3-1 in league play. The teams tied 1-1 last year in Sylvania, Ohio, which was AQ's lone non-victory during the team's 10-0-1 conference championship season.
Less than two minutes into Saturday's action,
Maeva Lichtensteiger sent a pass into the box from the right sideline and found
Macy Hollingsworth, who fired it past the Lourdes keeper for the early 1-0 advantage. The third goal of the season came at the 1:45 mark of the opening frame.
Things stayed relatively quiet for the remainder of the half, until a corner kick from
Marie-Louise Abild around the 34th minute found its way to a scrum in front of the net. The ball found defender
Breanna Probst, who put it past the Lourdes defense and keeper for her first goal of the year and a 2-0 lead for the home Saints. It was the sixth career goal for Probst and her first since the spring 2021 season.
AQ took all eight shots in the first half, with Lourdes not registering a shot attempt in the opening 45 minutes.
The second half was more of the same. Aquinas outshot the Grey Wolves by a 10-1 margin, making the final shot tally 18-1 in the Saints' favor. Goalkeeper
Kayla Shuk needed just one save in the second half to earn the shutout victory, her eighth of the year.
Sydney Shenk attempted a game-high five shots, while Hollingsworth and
Ariana Garcia took three apiece. Both of Probst's shots were on target, while
Hannah Crum and
Sandra Segovia also registered two shots apiece.
Lourdes owned slight edges in corner kicks (5-4) and fouls (15-14).
Aquinas is home again on Wednesday night (Oct. 19) at 7:00 p.m. against Siena Heights. Three of the Saints' final four regular season games are at the AQ Athletic Field, where the team is 6-0-1 this year.
