Grand Rapids, Mich. — After a whiplash of emotions in the first minute of play, the No. 15-ranked Aquinas women's soccer team settled in and refocused to capture a 5-2 home win on a chilly Wednesday (Oct. 19) night at the AQ Athletic Field.
Aquinas is now unbeaten in its last 17 home matches and improved to 12-2-1 overall and 8-0 WHAC this season with three regular season games remaining. Despite scoring more goals on Aquinas than any other WHAC team this season, Siena Heights dropped to 8-4-3 overall (3-2-3 WHAC).
SHU scored 58 seconds into Wednesday's contest after AQ fifth-year senior
Hannah Crum nearly scored less than 20 seconds into the match. While Crum's shot was saved onto the crossbar, SHU's leading goal scorer Marissa Young was able to slot the ball past AQ goalkeeper
Kayla Shuk to end Aquinas' streak of not allowing a goal in 408 minutes of game time over the last five matches. Lily Tiplady crossed the ball in on the counter-attack to assist Young's goal.
Crum got redemption in the 18th minute with a screamer from roughly 30 yards out that nestled into the left side netting. The long-range equalizer was assisted by
Sydney Shenk.
AQ then grabbed the lead with a little under six minutes left until halftime. A corner kick delivered into the box was poked out by
Brittney Carter to awaiting defender
Avery Tack. With traffic all around her, Tack connected and found the back of the net for her second goal this season and Carter's first helper on the year.
Aquinas took a 2-1 lead into halftime, outshooting Siena Heights 12-4 (7-2 shots on target). Crum already had five shots at halftime. She added two more in the second half to finish tied for a team-high in shots with
Maeva Lichtensteiger. Crum scored one of AQ's three second-half goals to give her a brace (two goals) and extend her all-time school record out to 64 career goals.
Shenk, arguably, stole Crum's "Goal of the Night" recognition when she cranked a shot from roughly 35 yards out that dipped around the SHU goalkeeper.Â
Katelyn Kahael added an insurance goal in the 88th minute to push the score out to 5-1. Less than 30 seconds later, SHU pulled that goal back with some quick passing to break down AQ's defense. Parker Cheney netted the goal and Hannah Moening dished out the assist.
Providing assisting on AQ's second-half goals were
Macy Hollingsworth,
Laia Cunill and
Hannah Bowling.
AQ ended up outshooting SHU 26-7 (15-3 shots on target). Siena Heights also didn't take a corner kick in the match.
Next up, Aquinas travels to Howell, Mich., this Saturday (Oct. 22) to face Cleary at 4 p.m.
