Dearborn, Mich. – After picking up a huge overtime victory against the UM-Dearborn Wolverines on Friday (Oct. 14), AQ took to the road to take on UMD for the second game of the two-game series last night (Oct. 15). The Wolverines responded strongly on their home ice and beat the Saints in convincing fashion, winning the game 8-2 to split the first series of the season.
Aquinas' four-game win streak was snapped as the Saints now move to 4-2 on the year with a 3-1 WHAC record.
Similar to Friday, the Wolverines would be the ones to score first, taking a 1-0 lead ten minutes and 14 seconds into the first period. AQ would get its first powerplay opportunity of the game couple a couple of minutes later and
Darren Johnson would tie the game at 1-1 with six minutes and 45 seconds left on the clock. The goal would be Johnson's third of the year while
Gustav Ostman and
Mason Stewart would be credited with the helpers on the goal.
UMD would quickly turn the tides of the game following the Johnson goal. Just a minute and 30 seconds later, UM-Dearborn would get a powerplay opportunity of its own and would immediately take the lead back. Just 33 seconds after that, the home team would place the puck into the back of the net once again to take a two-goal lead with three minutes and 42 seconds left on the clock.
However, UMD was not done scoring in the first period. The Wolverines would score one more powerplay goal with just seven seconds left on the clock to take a commanding 4-1 lead.
The second period did not get too much better for Aquinas as the home side would score three more goals while shutting out the Saints. The teams entered the second intermission with a 7-1 lead.
UM-Dearborn would score one more goal in the third period to take an 8-1 advantage. The goal would be UMD's fourth powerplay goal of the game. D. Johnson would score a consolation goal halfway through the third period, giving him four on the season. Stewart would be credited with his second assist of the game and his sixth of the season.
Christian Look picked up the second assist on the goal and his fourth of the young season.
That final goal would be the last be either side as UMD would close out the game with an 8-2 victory.
It was a tough night it net for
Michael Allman as he allowed six goals on 15 shots on goal. Tyler Sztrum did better in relief, saving 17 of 19 shots on target. UMD outshot AQ 34-32 over three periods of play.
The Saints return to action next weekend (Oct. 21-22) against another tough No. 8 Indiana Tech side. Aquinas is on the road for the first game as they are scheduled to play at 7:30 PM at SportONE Parkview Icehouse in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
