Late Goal Downs Saints at Siena Heights

Four-match unbeaten streak snapped on the road

Adrian, Mich. — In a defensive struggle, Siena Heights got the one break that was needed to grab a 1-0 home victory Wednesday (Oct. 19) night over the Aquinas men's soccer team.

SHU senior midfielder Matheus Marrote scored the game-winning goal unassisted in the 77th minute. It was his first goal of the season to catapult SHU to 5-7-1 overall (3-4-1 WHAC).

Aquinas drops to 8-5-2 overall (5-2-1 WHAC) with the crushing defeat. AQ had been unbeaten in its previous four matches, with three wins, coming into the contest. Aquinas has had better success playing at home (5-1-1) at the AQ Athletic Field than on the road (3-4-1) this season. The same can be said about Siena Heights, now 4-1-1 at home and 1-6 on the road.

AQ outshot SHU 20-13 (8-5 shots on target). Mason Sills took a team-high seven shots with five on target for Aquinas. Teammate Theo Maye had four shots (one on target).

Aquinas had nine corner kicks compared to three for Siena Heights.

In net, Aquinas senior goalkeeper Antonio Strassioto made four saves while SHU's Ricardo Moreno cleaned up seven shots for his third shutout of the season.

Aquinas returns to action this Saturday (Oct. 22) at 7 p.m. with a road contest at Cleary.
