Howell, Mich. — A scoreless first half didn't deter the Aquinas men's soccer team from picking up three more points on the road. The Saints (9-5-2, 6-2-1 WHAC) blanked Cleary (3-9-4, 1-6-2 WHAC) by a final score of 2-0 on Saturday (Oct. 22) evening to keep pace at the top of the conference standings.
Aquinas broke through three minutes into the second half when sophomore defender
Joshua Clemitson crossed the ball in and found the head of
Liam Travers. It was Travers' second goal of the season and second game-winning goal of his collegiate career. With four minutes left in regulation,
Mason Sills slotted in his team-leading ninth goal of the season for some extra insurance.
The Saints outshot the Cougars 25-8 (11-1 shots on target). AQ senior goalkeeper
Antonio Strassioto made the one save for his eighth shutout of the season. His back line of
Giuseppe Calabrese,
Andrea Ghiggini,
Jesunifemi Ojutalayo and Clemitson all played 90 minutes to preserve the clean sheet.
Next up, Aquinas travels to Lawrence Tech on Wednesday (Oct. 26). Kickoff set for 7 p.m. The Saints will then conclude the regular season at home on Saturday (Oct. 29) against No. 22-ranked Indiana Tech, which should have a big implication on the seeding for the upcoming WHAC Conference Tournament.
