Southfield, Mich. — A road win for the Aquinas men's soccer team would have secured a home postseason game in the first round of the upcoming WHAC Tournament, but Lawrence Tech had other ideas. The Blue Devils (5-6-6, 5-3-2 WHAC) dealt the Saints (9-6-2, 6-3-1 WHAC) their second-largest defeat this season by winning 3-0 Wednesday (Oct. 26) night in Southfield.
Lawrence Tech scored twice in the first half with goals coming from Ty Cerget in the 26th minute and Skander Larfaouri in the 40th minute. Larfaouri notched his second goal in the 72nd minute to put a final stamp on the 3-0 scoreline. Reece Still, Cesar Nunez and Gonzalo Sanz all picked up assists for the Blue Devils in the match.
Aquinas actually outshot Lawrence Tech 11-9 but the Blue Devils were more clinical by putting seven of their shots on target while LTU goalkeeper Marko Matovski only had to make one save to keep the Saints off the scoreboard.
AQ now sits in fourth place in the WHAC standings with 19 points. Lawrence Tech is in fifth place with 17 points. The Top 4 teams in the conference host quarterfinal games in the WHAC Tournament. Lawrence Tech is only team that can jump AQ for the fourth spot with one regular-season conference game remaining.
Lawrence Tech closes out the regular season against No. 24-ranked and WHAC leaders Madonna on Saturday (Oct. 29). Whereas, Aquinas will face No. 19-ranked Indiana Tech on Saturday at noon. The Saints will also be celebrating Senior Day.
