UMD Tops AQ After Completing Four-Goal Comeback

UM-Dearborn win 4-3; Wood, Kaczor, and Poole score for Aquinas

Byron Center, Mich. – AQ women's hockey was back on the ice tonight (Oct. 28) to take on UM-Dearborn after sweeping Davenport last weekend. AQ appeared to be in control of the game after taking a 3-0 lead early in the second period. However, the Wolverines would mount a comeback and eventually take the lead themselves after scoring four unanswered goals. The last goal for UMD would be the final of the game as the Wolverines would win the first of the two-game series by a score of 4-3.

AQ is now 2-2-1 on the season and drops to 0-1 in CCWHA conference play.

The Saints opened up the scoring early in the first period after Lauryn Wood tucked the puck past the UMD goalie to score her first goal of the season. The goal came just six minutes and six seconds into the period and was assisted by Ava Seychel, her third of the season.

Aquinas wouldn't be done scoring in the first as McKenna Kaczor would increase the Aquinas lead to two goals late in the first period. AQ was given its first powerplay opportunity of the game with just 47 seconds remaining on the clock. Kaczor would score just six seconds later. Reyna Dominczak would be credited with the helped on the play.

Both sides entered the locker rooms with the score at 2-0 with UMD outshooting AQ 9-6 during the first period.

AQ started the second period off with a bang as well as Darbi Poole would score her second goal of the season with 16:38 remaining on the clock. With a commanding 3-0 lead, the visiting Wolverines would make a change in net.

However, UMD would make the game interesting as the clock wound down in the second period. An unassisted goal with eight minutes and 15 seconds remaining on the clock would narrow the AQ lead to two. UM-Dearborn would score one more in the second period with 3:44 on the clock to narrow the Aquinas lead to just one. UMD would keep up the pressure, but AQ would hold the Wolverines off entering the second intermission.

UMD outshot AQ 20-9 in the second period.

The visiting Wolverines took their momentum into the third period and quickly equalized just five minutes into the period. Solid defense from the Wolverines would keep Aquinas out of the net and the Wolverines would break the tie with 11:29 left on the clock. That goal would be the last goal of the game as UM-Dearborn would complete the comeback and win 4-3.

UMD held the advantage in shots on goal in the third period as well, outshooting the Saints 16-8. Kadynce Romijn received the nod in net and saved 41 of 45 shots on net for a .911 save percentage. In total, UM-Dearborn outshot Aquinas 45-23.

Aquinas is back in action tomorrow (Oct. 29) with a road afternoon game against UMD. The puck is set to drop at 4:00 PM at UMD Ice Arena.
