AQ Men’s Soccer Dispatches 10-Man Rochester

The Saints score three times in first half to coast to third WHAC win

Grand Rapids, Mich. — The Aquinas men's soccer team got back in the win column Wednesday (Oct. 5) evening with a solid 4-0 win over visiting Rochester. Both teams entered the WHAC contest with an identical overall record, but the Saints walked away with an improved 6-4-1 mark (3-1 WHAC) while the Warriors fell to 5-5-1 (1-2-1 WHAC).

Aquinas grabbed an early lead in the 7th minute on a rebound goal scored by Ricardo Rittersberger. Mason Sills took the initial shot that wasn't held by the Rochester goalkeeper. Rittersberger cleaned up the scraps for his third goal of the season.

Sills ran past the Rochester defense for AQ's second goal in the 29th minute. A great individual effort was rewarded with his team-leading sixth goal of the season.

A red card issued to Rochester's Dmitar Stankovic in the 32nd minute changed the complex of the remainder of the match as the Warriors were left to play down a man for nearly an hour of game time.

With 16 seconds left in the first half, Sills scored again off a perfectly placed pass from Theo Maye.

Maye then scored AQ's last goal in the 55th minute after dribbling around multiple defenders. Maye now has a team-leading 20 points (six goals, eight assists) this season.

Aquinas outshot Rochester 26-4 (15-0 shots on goal), meaning Saints senior goalkeeper Antonio Strassioto wasn't forced to make a save in earning his fifth shutout this year.

AQ challenges No. 9-ranked UNOH this Saturday in Lima, Ohio. Kickoff at 4 p.m.
