Box Score Grand Rapids, Mich. – The AQ women's basketball team was back on the hardwood tonight (Nov. 16) to take on the Rochester Warriors. This is the second of AQ's three-game homestand. The Saints will be looking to bounce back tonight after taking a tough loss against Siena Heights this past weekend (Nov. 12). This would not be the case as the Warriors of Rochester would just squeak past the Saints by a score of 66-62 in overtime.
AQ falls to 3-3 on the season with a 1-2 WHAC record. The Warriors improve to 2-4 with a 2-0 WHAC record.
The first quarter got off to a bit of a slow start with the first two points of the game coming from an
Isabel Reemsnyder layup a minute and 31 seconds into the game. A layup from
JaKarri Alven and a jumper from
Brighton Miller would extend the AQ lead to 6-3 about halfway through the first quarter.
However, the Warriors would continue to respond.
Eliza Brown would nail a three pointer and
Brionne Crews would score a free throw, but the Saints would only hold a one-point lead at the conclusion of the first quarter.
The two sides would continue to go back-and-forth in the second quarter with the Warriors holding a slim advantage. AQ would tie the game at 19-19 with 4:34 left on the clock after another Brown three pointer. A pair of buckets would give RU a four-point edge with just under two minutes to play. Brown would stay hot and hit her third three of the game to narrow the Rochester lead to just one.
RU would score a layup and Brown would score yet another three to tie the game at 25-25 with just 33 seconds to play. Another layup for the Warrior at the last second would give themselves a two-point advantage heading into halftime.
Rochester would enter the second hot, extending its lead to seven with a 33-26 lead halfway through the third quarter. Seven points is the largest lead that either side had held up to this point in the match. AQ would quickly narrow the lead to just two points, but the Warriors would once again make the deficit seven with a 38-31 advantage.
With just 2:20 left on the clock in the third, RU would extend its lead to eight after a three-point play from Chenelle King. The Saints would go on a small run to end the quarter, but a pair of free throws with one second left on the clock would give the Warriors a five-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.
AQ would come out swinging in the fourth quarter as a layup from
Emily Cline and a three-pointer from Reemsnyder would tie the game at 43s. A trio of free throws between Reemsnyder and Alven would bring the AQ run to 8-0 and give the Saints a 46-43 lead.
RU would respond with a 6-0 run of its own to take the lead back as the two sides continued to trade buckets with the clock winding down. With 3:25 on the clock, A Miller three-pointer would give AQ a 57-53 advantage. However, the Warriors would score the next four points to tie the game at 57 with just a minute and thirty seconds to play. A series of missed shots and turnovers between the two teams would send the game into overtime after neither side managed to score a go-ahead bucket.
The two teams would trade baskets to start the bonus basketball period, but the Warriors would then score five unanswered to take a 64-59 lead. A series of fouls and free throws would ensue, leading to a 65-62 lead for the visiting side with just five seconds left to play. RU would score the one free throw it needed to seal the game and win 66-62.
As a team, the Warriors slightly outshot Aquinas from the field, shooting 34.7% to AQ's 33.3%. The Saints were significantly better tonight from beyond the arc, going 10-28 for a 35.7 three-point percentage. RU had just one more rebound, leading 48-47. However, the bid difference in the game came from turnovers and bench points. The Saints had 24 turnovers to RU's 13 and the Warriors had 34 bench points to AQ's 20.
Reemsnyder had her best game of the season thus far with 23 points, four rebounds, two assists, and a steal. She shot 7-20 from the field while scoring four of her 13 shots from three.
Brown also had her best game of the season so far, scoring 15 points with all of her points coming from beyond the arc. She nailed five of her eight three-point attempts for an impressive 62.5 three-point percentage.
Alven would be the third Saint to eclipse the double-digit mark, scoring 12 points tonight. Eight of her 12 points came from the charity stripe as she shot 8-10 from the free throw line. She would also lead the Saints in rebounds (10) and assists (5).
The Saints return to action this Saturday (Nov. 19) to take on the (RV) Indiana University of South Bend Titans. The tipoff is scheduled for 2:00 PM inside the Sturrus Center.
