Grand Rapids, Mich. – Nothing is guaranteed on the hardwood. That's a given, but when you add in the factors of a major rivalry game, well, forget the first meeting, throw team records out the door, and post-season ramifications are for another day. Now it's all about bragging rights. Aquinas vs. Cornerstone. There is no bigger rivalry in the WHAC, and with the two schools separated by less than five miles, the atmosphere inside the Sturrus was exactly what you would expect — tense, loud, and unforgiving.
Cornerstone 56, Aquinas 49
From the opening tip, it was clear this would not resemble the 17-point Aquinas win back on January 14. The Saints and Golden Eagles traded blows early, with Rhema Dozier getting AQ on the board and Isabel Reemsnyder knocking down an early triple to energize the home crowd. Paige Guernsey did what she always does in rivalry games — steady the ship — attacking the paint and finding teammates as the Saints carried an 11-10 edge after one.
The second quarter turned into a grind. Emily Cline battled inside, Hope Kanouse cleaned the glass, and Leah French provided a spark off the bench, but neither team could create separation. Aquinas struggled to find rhythm offensively, shooting just 30% for the game and finishing 3-of-18 from beyond the arc — a number that simply will not win you rivalry games.
The pivotal stretch came in the third quarter.
With the score tight coming out of halftime, Cornerstone found another gear, shooting over 50% in the frame while Aquinas managed just nine points in the quarter. The Saints' offensive possessions became hurried, and 17 total turnovers on the night proved costly. Every empty trip felt amplified in a game where every possession mattered.
Cornerstone placed four players in double figures, forcing AQ to defend multiple scoring threats, and the Golden Eagles capitalized at the free-throw line, finishing 11-of-14. Aquinas had more opportunities at the stripe, going 16-of-23, but left just enough points there to make the difference sting.
Still, the Saints did not fold.
Guernsey finished with 14 points and seven rebounds while directing traffic for 36 minutes. Reemsnyder added 11, including a perfect 6-for-6 night from the free-throw line. Cline contributed seven points and five rebounds despite battling through constant pressure. French chipped in eight off the bench, and Kanouse pulled down seven rebounds in a physical effort inside.
Aquinas outscored Cornerstone 19-17 in the fourth quarter, cutting the deficit to single digits late, but the third-quarter drought ultimately proved too much to overcome. Rivalry games rarely hinge on one moment — they hinge on stretches — and that nine-point third quarter was the stretch that swung the night.
The Saints now sit at 18-8 overall and 16-5 in WHAC play, and while this one hurts, the bigger picture remains in focus.

Coach's Comments
After the game, Head Coach Brian Morris addressed both the frustration and the focus moving forward:
"We've talked all year about not taking any possession — or any opponent — for granted. Rivalry games demand discipline, and tonight we didn't have it for a full 40 minutes. The third quarter hurt us. That said, this group has earned the right to still control its destiny. We can't let one night define who we are. We respond, we prepare, and we go to work on Saturday. The big picture is still right in front of us."
