Saints Outpaced in Second Half at #17 Indiana Tech

Aquinas suffers largest defeat of the season, can't keep pace with Warriors

Fort Wayne, Ind. — The Aquinas men's basketball team didn't quite have the firepower needed to hang with the first ranked opponent they have faced this season, as No. 17-ranked Indiana Tech rolled to a 75-56 win Tuesday evening (Nov. 22) in Fort Wayne, Ind.

The Saints (4-4, 2-2 WHAC) gave up a season-high 45.9% shooting percentage to the Warriors (7-1, 4-0 WHAC) and were outscored 42-26 in the second half to suffer their second straight conference loss.

Aquinas started strong, holding its biggest lead at 17-10 following a 3-pointer by Andrew Larson with 12:44 left in the first half. Indiana Tech responded with a 9-2 run to draw even at 19-19 just four minutes later. The Saints last took the lead at 27-26 on a Gabe Overway field goal with a little under four minutes left in the half.

Overway scored 10 of his team-high 16 points in the first half while also grabbing five rebounds. Warriors' Grant Smith led all scorers with 11 points in the first 20 minutes.

Indiana Tech broke the game open halfway through the second half, going on a 23-8 run in the last 10 minutes of the contest. The Warriors shot 48.4% from the floor in the second half compared to AQ's 40.9%. For the game, Indiana Tech outscored Aquinas 40-24 in points in the paint.

With the game out of reach late, AQ emptied its bench and allowed 15 different Saints to get some game time in the contest. Most notably, Tennessee transfer graduate student Hunter Huff made a free throw with roughly a minute remaining to score his first point for the program after playing on the AQ junior varsity team last season.

Other noteworthy performances for the Saints included Donovan Brown-Boyd having an efficient night with 11 points, five rebounds and two assists in 25 minutes. Menalito McGee finished with nine points on 4-for-7 shooting and Larson ended with seven points.

Smith led all scorers with 21 points for the Warriors on 8-for-14 shooting. Rog Stein (12 points) and Lucas Lehrman (10 points) also crossed double-digits for Indiana Tech.

Aquinas will return to action after the Thanksgiving break with a road contest at Lourdes on Wednesday (Nov. 30) at 7:30 p.m.
