Byron Center, Mich. — The Aquinas men's hockey team scored early and often en route to a 7-1 victory over No. 20-ranked Lawrence Tech on Friday night (Nov. 4) at Southside Ice Arena. The Saints (7-4, 4-3 WHAC) dismantled the conference-leading Blue Devils (10-2, 7-2 WHAC) with five different goal scorers finding the back of the net and junior goaltender
Michael Allman making 43 saves at the other end of the ice.
Aquinas set the tone early with a goal by
Danny Barry 1:20 into the contest. A pair of Johnson's,
Kirwin Johnson and
Alex Johnson, provided the assists. Senior defenseman captain
Mason Stewart added an unassisted goal with a little over seven minutes left in the opening period to put AQ up 2-0 after the first 20 minutes.
The floodgates opened in the second period with Aquinas scoring four goals. Goal No. 3 came early into the period with
Darren Johnson slotting in the goal — assists went to
Christian Look and
Brandon Rozema.
Lawrence Tech scored its lone goal halfway through the second period to cut the deficit down to 3-1. Â
Rozema, Look and Stewart rattled off three goal in 1:13 to effectively nail down the victory near the end of the second period. Rozema joined Stewart with two goals in the contest with the final tally of the game coming 50 seconds into the third period.
Penalties started to accumulate at the end and three game misconduct infractions were called — two against AQ, one against Lawrence Tech — to prevent things from boiling over.Â
Lawrence Tech, despite losing by six goals, outshot Aquinas 43-36. Allman made save after save to prevent the Blue Devils from making any sort of comeback.
The Saints now head to Lawrence Tech for a road WHAC contest tomorrow night (Nov. 5). Puck drop is set for 8 p.m.
