Grand Rapids, Mich. – The AQ Saints men's hockey team took on No. 17-ranked Grand Valley State University tonight (Dec. 9) to kick of the Grand Rapids Hall of Fame Tournament. The Lakers would get off to a hot start against the Saints, taking a 5-0 lead in the first period. AQ would never be able to get a foothold in the game and would fall 6-1.
Aquinas now moves to 8-10 on the season and remains at 4-7 in WHAC play.
Grand Valley State opened the floodgates with 10:53 remaining on the clock in the first period. Over the course of the next five minutes, GVSU would score four more goals, forcing the Saints to swap goalies. The Lakers' scoring run featured three even-strength goals and two power play goals.
AQ would manage to pull a goal back with just three seconds left on the clock.
Brandon Rozema would score his ninth goal of the year.
Dylan Rumpke would get credited with a team-leading 19th assist of the season. The first period would end with the score 5-1 in favor of the Lakers. GV outshot AQ 25-6 in the first period.
The Laker dominance would continue in the second period as they continued to outshoot the Saints, this time by a total of 23-5. GVSU would add another goal to its total with another power play goal. However,
Michael Allman would put it a couple of big saves to keep the score at 6-1.
GV would slow down a bit in the third period, but would continue to play tough defense against AQ. Neither side would manage to score in the third as the game would end 6-1.
Allman had a solid game in net in relief of
Tyler Szturm. Allman saved 47 of 49 shots on net for a .959 save percentage.
The Saints will take on the loser of the Calvin vs. Davenport game for a third-place matchup tomorrow. The puck is set to drop at 5:30 PM at Eagles Ice Center.
