Lake Superior State Scores Late Goal to Top Aquinas 3-2

Exline and Metz each score, but can't quite beat the Lakers

The women's hockey team traveled all the way to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan to play a two-game road series against the Lake Superior State University Lakers. The two teams would trade goals, but it would be the Lakers that would score the last goal, giving them a 3-2 victory over the Saints. The Saints are now 6-15-2 after the result with a 3-8-1 CCWHA conference record.

Aquinas would be the first team to score in the first period, scoring at 10:59 of the first period. The goal was scored by Alyssa Exline, tying Lauryn Wood for a team-leading seventh goal of the season. The goal was assisted by Anna Castle, her fourth of the season. Two minutes later, Lake Superior State would return the favor with a goal of their own, tying the game at 1-1. There would be offsetting penalties and a powerplay for the Saints, but neither team would find the back of the net for the remainder of the period.

Aquinas would take the lead again early on in the second period with an unassisted goal from Bridget Metz. The goal at 14:23 was the first goal of the season for Metz. Aquinas would kill off two penalties in the period, but the Lakers managed an unexpected shorthanded goal at 7:03 to level the score. Both goalies remained stout for the remainder of the period as the teams entered the locker rooms to prepare for the third period of play.

The Saints killed off two more penalties in the third period as they attempted to obtain the lead for the third time this game. The Saints were unable to find the back of the net as the period was ending with the score tied at two. The Lakers would finally be the ones to break the tie with 3:43 remaining on the clock. The Saints would get a golden opportunity to tie the game and go into overtime. Lake Superior State was called for goaltender interference with 1:56 left to play, giving AQ a late game powerplay. The Lakers would be called for cross-checking at 1:37 to give Aquinas five-on-three hockey to end the game. AQ was unable to capitalize off of the late chance and the game would end at 3-2 in favor of Lake Superior State.

Kadynce Romijn was the starting goalie for Aquinas, saving 35 of 38 shots on net. The Lakers outshot the Saints 38-28 in the game.
