Box Score The AQ women's hockey team played its final game of the season tonight (Feb. 19) against Indiana Tech. Additionally, the Aquinas women's hockey program celebrated its two seniors,
Mikayla Oppermann and
Alyssa Buzar. Oppermann and Buzar got on the scoresheet fast, assisting a goal less than a minute into the game. AQ would score another, but it would be the Warriors who would come out ahead in the end, winning 4-2. Aquinas fishes the season 6-18-2 with a 3-10-1 conference record.
The first period could not have started any better for the Saints. Forward
Madison Morgrette scored just 58 seconds into the game. Assisting the goal was the two seniors Buzar and Oppermann. AQ scored again just 44 seconds later, this time
Alyssa Exline scoring an unassisted goal. It was two shots and two goal for the Saints. Later in the period, at 13:51, Indiana Tech scored an shorthanded goal to narrow the Aquinas lead to just one goal. The remainder of the period was fairly uneventful. AQ killed off two penalties and had a few more shots on goal. However, the period would end with the score still at 2-1. Indiana Tech outshot Aquinas in the period 12-7.
The second period was all Indiana Tech as they controlled possession and pace of play for a majority of the period. IT leveled the score with a goal at 16:24 in the second period. A few minutes later, AQ was put into the box for hooking, giving the Warriors their third powerplay of the game. The Saints managed to kill off the powerplay, making them three-for-three in powerplay kills. IT continued to pepper the Saints net and eventually found the back of the net on a rebound goal with 2:37 left on the clock. The teams would enter the locker rooms with the score 3-2 in favor of the Warriors. IT outshot AQ 21-5 in the second period.
The Warriors scored again a minute and 34 seconds into the third period, making the score 4-2. AQ had a couple of golden opportunities to score as the period progressed. Aquinas had a five-on-three chance with nine minutes left to play, but IT managed to kill off the chance. A couple of minutes later, the Saints had another five-on-three, but, again, Indiana Tech killed off the penalty. Neither side would score for a remainder of the period and the game would end 4-2 in favor of the Warriors.
Kadynce Romijn started in net and had a great night, saving 51 of 55 shots on target, good for a .927 save percentage.
This was the last game for the Saints of the 2021-2022 season.
