Aquinas Duo Takes NAIA National Player of the Week Awards

Boerigter (Defensive) and Sweet (Offensive) sweep weekly NAIA accolades

Clayton Boerigter and Zachary Sweet of the Aquinas men's lacrosse team have been named the NAIA National Defensive and Offensive Player of the Week, as announced on Tuesday (Feb. 22). The duo helped the Saints to a 9-8 double overtime win over Webber International this past Thursday as both teams were receiving votes in the NAIA Top-10 Poll.

Boerigter picked up his second career WHAC Defensive Player of the Week selection yesterday as this is his first national player of the week selection. He had 21 saves in over 65 minutes of action due to the extra needed for the Saints to win the game. From the fourth quarter on, Boerigter came up clutch as he only allowed one goal in the final regulation and two overtime periods to let his offense complete the comeback. There was only one other time in his career where he had more than 21 saves in a game and that was last year against Indiana Tech on March 24 where he made 23 saves. Coming off an All-WHAC Second Team selection last season, his .724 save percentage this game is on track to be better than his .560 save percentage last season, while his 7.36 goals-against average is three goals better than last year's 10.74.

This is the second time in his young two-year career that Sweet has been honored with NAIA Offensive Player of the Week after also being selected of the WHAC Offensive Player of the Week for the second time yesterday. Sweet kept the Saints in the game against Webber International by scoring nearly half of the team's goals with four on the day. In the eight career games that he has played in, Sweet has scored four goals or more in half of them. He was second on the team in goals in his All-WHAC First Team season last year with 25 in seven games played and is off to a good start again this season. When Sweet put the ball on target against WIU, it went in majority of the time as for of his five shots on net ended in a goal for AQ. He scored the first goal of the game, while two of his other goals tied the game back up after WIU took the lead.

The Saints will take the field twice this upcoming weekend with the first being on Friday (Feb. 26) in St. Louis, Missouri with a bout against Missouri Baptist at 12:00 PM.
