Men's Lacrosse Upsets #5 Columbia

The men's lacrosse team was back in action this weekend for their second game of the season. The Saints took on #5 nationally ranked Columbia College and was able to pull off the upset thanks to two hat tricks and nine different players scoring.
 
With the victory, (RV) AQ moves to 2-0 on the season, while the Cougars start the season 0-1.
 
The Saints struck first with a pair of goals in the first period from Hunter Roberts and Mitch Haggart. The #5 ranked Cougars showed out though with three unanswered goals from there. One of these was a man up goal. Before the end of the period, both teams scored again with the Saints goal coming from Joey Fitzgerald.
 
AQ drew first blood in the second quarter when Mitch Haggart scored at 11:17. Neither team could capitalize until 3:15 left in the quarter when Columbia scored. Then AQ scored three times in less than two minutes with goals from Andrew Briskey, Jon Jardis and Blake Baker. Columbia scored one more time before the end of the period to send the two teams to the half. Aquinas lead 7-6.
 
The Saints put in work during the third period outscoring the Cougars 6-3. The goals came from Brady Waling, Jack Rioux, Joey FitzgeraldJon Jardis and two goals from Zachary Sweet. The period ended with the Saints up 13-9.
 
Looking for the upset, the Saints had a four point advantage. The cougars wouldn't go quietly though as they scored two goals to bring them within two points. AQ slammed the door on the comeback though when Mitch Haggart and Jon Jardis both scored again. Columbia scored two more times in the last minute, but the Saints had secured the win at this point.
 
Clayton Boerigter faced 24 shots on the day and had 11 saves. Austin Hynote finished the game for the Saints in the final minute.
 
The Saints will be back in action on March 16, when the play in Holland, Michigan against Hope College. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
