The AQ women's hockey team took to home ice to take on the UM-Dearborn Wolverines tonight (Feb 4). The Saints had a massive three-goal second period, but it wasn't quite enough to stop the rally by the Wolverines. UMD would go on to win the game in overtime by a score of 4-3. AQ is now 6-13-2 with a 3-7-1 CCWHA record.
The first period was a defensive battle between the two teams. Both sides got a handful of opportunities, but neither side was able to capitalize. UM-Dearborn received a powerplay at 6:47, but then received its own penalty thirty seconds later. Neither side had a shot on target during the four-on-four chance. The period would go on to end with the score still at 0-0. UMD outshot AQ 13-9 for the period.
The second period was a wild one in comparison to the first period.
McKenna Kaczor scores her second goal of the season at 14:45 in the second period. The goal was assisted by graduate student
Natalie Vaitas and freshman
Zoe Bergen. UMD would level the score at 9:12 in the period after a shot from the blue line. However, AQ would take the lead again after a powerplay goal at 6:04 in the period. Kaczor picked up her second goal of the game, assisting the goal was freshman forward
Alyssa Exline. Aquinas would score again just twelve second later. This time the goal was scored by Vaitas and assisted by Bergen and
Gina Marzolo. The teams would enter the locker rooms with the score at 3-1 in favor of the Saints.
The Wolverines came out of the locker room with their rally caps on. UMD scored one minute and forty-four seconds into the period to bring the score to 3-2. They continued to pepper the net with shots until one finally found the back of the net with 4:39 to play in the third period. AQ would get a good chance of its own shortly after but was unable to take the game. UMD outshot AQ 29-7 in the third period as the teams would head to overtime.
Three one three hockey didn't last long as the Wolverines found the back of the net 59 seconds into the period. That goal would end the game at 4-3.
Kadynce Romijn got the start in net and had another good night, saving 53 of 57 shots on target, good for a .93 save percentage.
AQ takes the ice again tomorrow night (Feb. 5) at UMD Campus Ice Arena. The puck is set to drop at 7:00 PM.
