The AQ women's hockey team took on the University of Michigan-Dearborn Wolverines on Saturday (Feb. 5) for the second game of the series. The Wolverines jumped out to an early 3-0 lead in the first period and the Saints were unable to overcome the deficit as UMD would go on to win 4-1 at the end of regulation. The Saints are now 6-14-2 on the season with a 3-8-1 record in CCWHA conference play.
The first period started off slow with both sides playing solid defensive. Aquinas would get a powerplay opportunity at 11:17 on the clock in the first period. UM-Dearborn managed to kill the penalty and the game continued with the score at 0-0. Erin Murphy of UM-Dearborn broke the tied game at 7:57 in the first period, scoring an unassisted goal. Her sister, Claire Murphy, scored again just 19 seconds later to make the score 2-0 in favor of Dearborn. The Wolverines would proceed to score one more goal in the first period to command a 3-0 lead heading into the first intermission.
The second period started off pretty slow, similar to the first period. Neither side managed to conjure many chances as the score remained 3-0. However, that changed once
Zoe Bergen was called for checking at 9:47 in the second period. Dearborn would capitalize off the powerplay and increase the score to 4-0. The remainder of the period would remain scoreless as neither side put many shots on target.
The Wolverines did a good job of icing the game in the third period, limiting the scoring chances for the Saints. AQ would get a powerplay chance towards the end of the period and would put its first goal up on the scoreboard.
Madison Morgrette would score the powerplay goal, assisting the goal was
Morgan Kozar and
Jenna Blackwell. That would be the final goal scored in the game with the final result at 4-1 in favor of the Wolverines.
Ashley Suske got the start in net and saved 19 of 23 shots on goal for an 82.6% save percentage.
AQ will be looking to bounce back with its road series against Lake Superior State on Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 12-13). The game on Saturday is scheduled to begin at 7:45 PM and the game on Sunday will start at 3:30 PM.
