The men's hockey team was back in action on Saturday, February 6, when they battled against rival Indiana Tech in front of an electric crowd at Southside Ice Arena. After getting swept by the Warriors earlier in the season, the Saints were able to complete a sweep of their own in an OT thriller.
Â
In the first period, the Saints went down 2-0 when Indiana Tech scored at 15:58 on a powerplay and 6:30. But the Saints would not leave the period without having their own goal. At 4:19,
Mason Stewart was able to score after getting the puck from
David Elford and
Darren Johnson.
Â
Michael Allman faced 10 shots on goals while Aquinas put nine on Indiana Tech.
Â
Then in the second period, freshman
Christian Look was the only person from both sides able to score when he found the back of the net at 14:37 when he was unassisted on the play. The Saints were able to score here, due to head coach
Jordan Permoda's play calling when he pulled
Michael Allman from the goal. In this period the Saints put up seven shots to the Warriors six.
Â
Then in third, the Warriors scored quickly on another powerplay goal at 19:32.
Nick Long would quickly respond with a goal 28 seconds later at 19:04. He was assisted by
Brandon Schwandt. There wouldn't be another goal in the period despite both teams having powerplays. The Saints outshot the Warriors 14-12 in the period.
Â
From here, the teams headed into overtime. The Saints had a 1 man advantage heading into overtime due to penalties that happened at the end of the third period. Then as penalties were ending at 4:22,
Mason Stewart was able to finish the game with an unassisted goal. The Saints only needed one shot to ice the game.
Â
With this sweep, the Saints look to move up in the rankings in the next ACHA poll. The Saints finish up their regular season next week as the play against the Davenport University Panthers at home on Friday, and away on Saturday. Puck drop is set for 8:00 PM on Friday.
