The #5 Aquinas men's lacrosse team continued their dominance in the WHAC with a win over Taylor in Upland, Indiana on Wednesday (Apr. 13). The Saints saw eleven players score in route to a 22-6 victory. AQ improves to 7-3 (5-1 WHAC) on the season, while Taylor drops to 2-10 (0-6 WHAC).
Taylor was the first team to strike in the game, but the rest of the quarter was all Aquinas. Joey Fitzegerald was the first Saint to score in the game at the time of 11:04. From here goals in the quarter came from
Mitch Haggart,
Zachary Sweet, Haggart again,
Jon Jardis, and
Lou Nageotte.
To start the second Taylor scored two goals to bring the score to 6-3. The Saints scored five times in the period. Two of these goals came from
Mitch Haggart to earn him a hat trick. The other goals came Sweet, Fitgerald, and
Jack Rioux.
In the third quarter the Saints scored six times compared to Taylor's one. Sweet found the back of the net first when he scored a man up goal at 13:03 being assisted by Jardis.
Kyle Gauthier was next as he netted a goal about a minute later on an assist from
Blake Baker.
Kevin LaHaie took a turn scoring when he scored his 11th goal of the season. Taylor's one goal came halfway between the Saints six. From here
Alex Rolands and
Zachary Sweet scored when they were assisted by Haggart on both goals. Sweet would score one more time to end the third with a score of 17-4.
The final quarter saw
Blake Baker score a man up goal to start on another assist from Haggart. The other goals came from
Kevin LaHaie, Hunter Robers (2), and
Kyle Gauthier.
In goal
Clayton Boerigter played a majority of the game with roughly 46 minutes of game time. He had three goals against him and tallied nine saves.
Ricky Vega and
Austin Hynote both saw time in final quarter facing a combine four shots. Each record a save and Hynote allowed two goals.
In the contest Haggart totaled nine points and Sweet lead the team with five goals on the day.
Jon Jardis then had three points which put him at 100 career points. He is only the 13th Saint to do so in Aquinas History.
Aquinas out shot Concordia 73-35. The defense forced the Cardinals into 26 turnovers compared to the Saints' 23. AQ also held advantages in clears (25-23), ground balls (39-26), and the two teams each had 15 faceoffs.
The Saints stay on the road for their next WHAC match-up against Lourdes on Saturday (Apr. 16) in Sylvania, OH. The opening face-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
