The #5 Aquinas men's lacrosse team had another dominant WHAC win over Cleary in Howell, Michigan on Friday (Apr. 8). The Saints lead the entire game and saw eleven players score in route to a 20-2 victory. AQ improves to 6-3 (4-1 WHAC) on the season, while CUAA drops to 0-10 (0-5 WHAC).
The men struck quickly in the first quarter when
Jon Jardis scored at 14:02.
Blake Baker,
Jack Rioux, and
Zachary Sweet decided to take turns scoring this period before Cleary was able to answer.
Mitch Haggart was able to score before time ran out in the period, netting a goal at :13.
The Saints struck first in the second period with a goal at 8:36 when
Mitch Haggart found
Joey Fitzgerald for the score. Cleary then had their final goal of the game at 7:42 in the second, and from here Aquinas locked down the Cougars.
Joey Fitzgerald would then score a man up goal at 5:04. Also scoring in the period was
Nico Kittredge and
Zachary Sweet.
Aquinas would have their most dominant quarter in the third as they shut down the Cougars defensively and were able to score seven times. Jardis would start the period off with scoring at 7:41 and only six second later
Mitch Haggart would score off of
Reed Chastain's draw control. The other five goals would come in the last five minutes of with scores from Sweet,
Cam Gunn,
Nolan Benoit,
Hunter Roberts, and Fitzgerald.
The final quarter saw Baker, Rioux, Sweet, and
Brady Waling find the back of the net to bring the Saints grand total to 20.
Austin Hynote saw his first start of the season today when he played in the first half for the Saints. He saw five shots in his thirty minutes and was able to save three of them. In the second half,
Ricky Vega stepped in and had two saves and no goals against him.
Aquinas outshot Concordia 81-11. The defense forced the Cardinals into 33 turnovers compared to the Saints' 12. AQ also held advantages in clears (25-14), ground balls (57-14), and face-offs (20-6).
The Saints will hit the road for their next WHAC match-up against Taylor on Wednesday (Apr. 13) in Upland, Indiana with the opening face-off scheduled for 4:00 PM.
