The #6 Aquinas men's lacrosse team has qualified for the NAIA National Tournament as announced on Sunday (May 1) after a stellar season. This is the second time in AQ history that the men's lacrosse team has made it to the national tournament with the other one time being in 2019. Aquinas hosted the 2019 tournament at the AQ Athletic Field and the Saints finished as the national runner-up to Reinhardt. The Saints are 10-4 so far in the 2022 season and finished second in the WHAC regular season.
Fellow WHAC school, Indiana Tech, enters the tournament as the #1 seed after winning the WHAC regular season and WHAC Tournament. As the only school to make the men's lacrosse NAIA National Tournament in all six seasons of existence, Reinhardt comes in as the second seed. St. Ambrose will be the first round match-up for the Saints as the #3 seed. Cumberlands (Ky.) and Tennessee Wesleyan will be the fourth and fifth seeded game. Keiser (Fla.) and Benedictine (Kan.) rounds out the field as the #7 and #8 seeds.
Aquinas was one of five at-large bids that made the big dance with Cumberlands, Keiser, St. Ambrose, and Tennessee Wesleyan also getting in as an at-large. IT was the WHAC champion, Benedictine was the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference Tournament champ, and Reinhardt won the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament.
The first round game will be a rematch from a top-10 match-up earlier this season between the Saints and the Fighting Bees. SAU came out of that game victorious by a slim margin with a 16-13 win over AQ. This will be the third first round game played on the opening day of the tournament (May 11), beginning at 4:00 PM in Pensacola, Florida.
