St. Louis, Mo. — One goal was good enough for the No. 9-ranked Aquinas women's soccer. The Saints (1-0) won their season opener by narrowly knocking off Jamestown (RV) 1-0 on Friday evening, Aug. 26, in a neutral site game played in St. Louis, Missouri.
 Â
AQ's lone goal came courtesy of senior
Ariana Garcia, unassisted in the 47th minute, to assist new head coach James Decosemo in earning his first win with the program in his debut.
Aquinas held Jamestown to one shot, that wasn't on target, in the first 45 minutes. The back line of
Jenna Konwerski,
Merin McDermott,
Avery Tack and
Breanna Probst prevented the Jimmies (0-1) from even getting close to their net.
Unable to break a scoreless statement in the first half, the Saints offense didn't waste their opportunity to seize the lead a little over a minute into the second half. A corner kick not cleared out by the Jimmies defense found the left foot of senior
Ariana Garcia, who shot the ball across the goal and found the side netting to score AQ's first goal of the new season.
Garcia's 14th career goal was also her fifth game-winning goal for the program.
Aquinas outshot Jamestown 14-3 (5-1 shots on target).
Jamestown's Karlie Hintz picked up the only yellow card of the game in the 50th minute.Â
The Saints stay in St. Louis for another neutral site game at the Rush Soccer Complex on Sunday, Aug. 28, against the No. 3-ranked Central Methodist Eagles (1-1). The Eagles lost 2-1 to Cumberlands on Friday. Kickoff between Aquinas and Central Methodist will be at 1 p.m. EST.Â
