St. Louis, Mo. — The No. 9 Aquinas women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season, 3-1, to No. 3 Central Methodist Sunday afternoon (Aug. 28) in a showdown between two Top 10 ranked teams in the NAIA.
The Saints (1-1) conceded three goals in the first 55 minutes before the program's all-time leading goal scorer
Hannah Crum slotted in a consolation penalty shot tally in the 63rd minute. It was her first goal of the season and 57th goal of her collegiate career.Â
Central Methodist scored first in the 19th minute on Sandra Jakobsen's first goal of the season. Eagles sophomore midfielder Marcella Helena added two more goals in the 48th minute and the 55th minute. Helena already has four goals this season, scoring in all three of Central Methodist's games.Â
Aquinas was outshot 17-8 (10-5 shots on target). However, Crum made sure the Saints weren't shutout with her second-half goal. While CMU goalkeeper Judit Gonzalez Oliveras guessed the right way, Crum still powered her penalty shot into the bottom corner.
Breanna Probst,
Sydney Shenk and
Brittney Carter also registered shots on goal for the Saints.
Central Methodist's Jade Perrin received a red card in the second half. The teams also combined for five yellow cards and 29 total fouls.
The Saints return to the pitch on Tuesday, August. 30, for their home opener against Olivet Nazarene (0-2). Kickoff from the Aquinas College Athletic Field is set for 6 p.m.
