#16 Aquinas Upends MVNU 2-0 for Homecoming Win

Saints outshoot Cougars 22-3, score goals in both halves to secure win

Grand Rapids, Mich. — The Aquinas women's soccer team gave its homecoming crowd something to cheer about Saturday (Sept. 17) in a 2-0 win over Mt. Vernon Nazarene at the AQ Athletic Field.

The No. 16-ranked Saints (4-2-1) scored in both halves to secure its third shutout win of the season. The MVNU Cougars dropped to 3-5-0 overall on the season.

Aquinas junior forward Laia Cunill became the Saints' first multi-goal scorer this season when she twisted around to head the ball past MVNU goalkeeper Hannah Miller in the 28th minute. Senior midfielder Macy Hollingsworth provided the ball into the box for the assist.

The two AQ playmakers switch roles on Saints' second goal in the 76th minute. This time Cunill delivered the ball into the box off a corner kick and found Hollingsworth. It was her first goal of the season, giving the Saints eight different goal scorers so far this season.

AQ freshman goalkeeper Kayla Shuk made two saves to preserve the shutout. Aquinas outshot MVNU 22-3 (10-2 shots on target).

Cunill led the team with four shots, followed by Hollingsworth, Ariana Garcia, Maeva Lichtensteiger and Sydney Shenk with three shots apiece.

No cards were shown in the match with AQ committing one more foul, 9-8. The Saints took eight corner kicks while not giving the Cougars one.

The Saints open conference play next Saturday (Sept. 17) at Concordia. Kickoff at 1 p.m.
