Adrian, Mich. — Tied 20-20 at halftime with both teams shooting below 30% in the first half, something had to give in the Battle of the Saints on Saturday afternoon (Jan. 13).
The Aquinas men's basketball team finally pulled away halfway through the second half to knock off its same-name mascot counterparts from Siena Heights in a low-scoring, 59-51, grind it out kind of affair.
AQ (8-10, 5-7 WHAC) has now won two out of its last three games after splitting with against a pair of opponents who received votes in the latest Top-25 poll. Meanwhile, Siena Heights (5-14, 2-9 WHAC) lost its third straight game and is fighting to make the WHAC Tournament.
Siena Heights led by as many as 11 points in the first half, 16-5, after holding AQ to just five points in the first 10 minutes. Aquinas returned the favor at the end of the first half by limiting SHU to two points over the last five and a half minutes.Â
Using a 10-2 run, AQ leveled the score at 20-20 going into halftime.
Nick Henry contributed five of the points with a pair of buckets and a made free throw.
Both teams shot considerably better in the second half. AQ went from 27.6% to 46.4%, while SHU improved from 29.2% to 41.7%.Â
Gabe Overway, who finished with a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, turned out to be AQ's go-to scorer.
Jared Dugener was also lethal behind the three-point line, knocking down three out of his four 3-pointers.
Donovan Brown-Boyd buried another triple with just over six minutes remaining to give AQ a 45-38 lead. The Saints made their free throws down the stretch to clinch the 59-51 road victory. Overway went 6-for-6 at the charity stripe.Â
Davin Walker led SHU with 18 points. Curtis Bell III added 10 points and 11 rebounds.
Over half of Aquinas' points came off the bench, with the Saints' second and third units scoring 30 points.Â
AQ is back in action on Wednesday (Jan. 18) at Rochester with tip-off at 5:30 p.m.
