Byron Center, MI - The men's hockey team returned to the Southside Ice Arena for the second of two games against the Grand Valley State Lakers. The Lakers set the tone for the game in the first period with 3 goals and never let off the gas as the final score was 6-1.
Â
The Lakers first score came at 17:12 in the first period, but then the two teams went up and down the ice for 16 minutes before another score would come. AQ would look to even the score due to a Grand Valley slashing penalty, but the Lakers flipped the script with a short-handed goal at 3:24. The two teams skated on until
Brendan McCatty was called for a tripping penalty that resulted in a Lakers power play goal. GV peppered the goal in the first period with 19 shots compared to AQ's 7.
Â
In the second period the two teams matched each other with 18 shots each, but AQ was unable to find the back of the net while GV found it once. The game had plenty of action though there was a total of ten penalties in the period. Grand Valley had six to AQ's four. GV left the period with a 4-0 lead.
Â
The Saints looked to mount an incredible comeback going into the third period, but they were overwhelmed by the Laker's shots on goal. The Saints were able to score once in the final period when
Christian Look scored unassisted at 12:21 but his goal was sandwiched in between two GV goals.
Â
In goal,
Tyler Szturm faced 49 shots and was able to save 43 of them.
Â
AQ falls just below .500 as they now sit 13-14 overall. They will look to go above .500 next weekend when they play #15 Lawrence Tech. The men travel to Farmington Hills on Friday for the conference matchup that begins at 7:30 PM.
