Grand Rapids, Mich. — Approaching the hour mark on Wednesday night (Oct. 11), a breakthrough was finally made as
Tevan Jones picked the right time to score his first goal for Aquinas. On his 22nd shot this season, the junior transfer picked out the top right corner to deliver the AQ men's soccer team a 1-0 victory over in-city rivals Cornerstone.
The 59th minute goal held up as the game-winning tally in another tight showdown with the Golden Eagles. Five out of the last eight meetings between these two teams have been decided by a single goal.
Aquinas improved to 9-2-1 overall (5-1 WHAC) and 6-1-1 in home games this season. With five more regular season conference games remaining, the Saints hold second place with 15 points. Lawrence Tech leads with 16 points, while Indiana Tech (14 points) and Madonna (13 points) are right in the mix as well for the regular season WHAC title.
The Golden Eagles (3-7-3, 1-4-1 WHAC) failed to get one of their nine shots on target Wednesday to even challenge AQ goalkeeper
Antonio Strassioto. The fifth-year senior earned his sixth shutout of the season without having to make a save.
Aquinas defenders
Joe Lockey,
Jesunifemi Ojutalayo,
Josh Freeman-Wright and
Fin Pittock, along with defensive midfielder
Andrea Ghiggini all played a vital role in keeping the Golden Eagles off the scoreboard.
Pittock, playing quick passes
Mason Sills to work his way up the sideline, crossed in a ball from the right side to setup Jones' goal. It was his fourth assist this season.
Aquinas ended up outshooting Cornerstone, 15-9 (7-0 shots on target). Jones had four of the shots on target for the Saints.
Ricardo Rittersberger,
Jai Tahlan and Sills had the other three.
Next up, the Saints travel to face Lourdes (2-6-4, 2-3-1 WHAC) on Saturday night (Oct. 14). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
