The first career goal for midfielder
Olivia Bowling could not have come at a better time, as the sophomore's header with just 53 seconds remaining lifted the #7 Aquinas women's soccer team to a 1-0 road victory at Lourdes on Saturday (Oct. 14) in Ohio. It was the 22nd and final shot of the contest for the Saints and Bowling's goal helped AQ remain unbeaten in WHAC play.
Aquinas has now shut out 10 straight opponents, extending its scoreless streak to 926 minutes. AQ has outscored those foes 34-0 during this stretch, having not allowed a goal since Sept. 7 at #24 Campbellsville.
The Saints stayed undefeated at 11-0-2 and are 6-0-1 in WHAC play. Lourdes drops to 4-8-1 on the season, 1-6 in conference action.
There were 24 shots in the game – 22 of which came from the Saints. The final shot of the contest proved to be the difference maker. A scoreless first 45 minutes saw AQ take 12 of the 13 shots and record all four corner kicks, with neither team finding the net.
Aquinas pressured the Lourdes defense throughout the second half and especially in the closing minutes, as the Gray Wolves sat back and packed it in against the Saints offense.
Laia Cunill took a corner kick in the 87th minute that was knocked away by Lourdes, but she was able to get another try from the opposite corner just one minute later.
As the PA announcer mentioned that there was less than one minute remaining, Cunill sent a great corner into the box, where Bowling was waiting in perfect position. She played it off her head and past two Lourdes defenders and the goalkeeper for the game's only tally. Cunill earned her team-high eighth assist on the game-winner.
It was just the sixth shot of the season for Bowling, but she made it count. 53 seconds later, the Saints officially earned the victory. Bowling logged 67 minutes off the bench on Saturday, as AQ utilized seven bench players in the win.
Aquinas led 22-2 in shots and 10-0 in corners. Goalkeeper
Kayla Shuk made saves on both Lourdes' shots on target to earn her 10th shutout in 12 games played.
Maeva Lichtensteiger and
Ariana Garcia took four shots apiece for AQ. Garcia, Cunill, and
Macy Hollingsworth each put two shots on target.
Five of the Saints' final six games of the regular season are on the road. The first two road contests (3-0 win at Cornerstone on Wednesday, 1-0 win over Lourdes) ended in victories. Aquinas returns to the pitch on Wednesday (Oct. 18) at 7:00 p.m. against Siena Heights. Senior Day will take place at home next Saturday (Oct. 21) at noon versus Cleary.
