Elkhart, IN — This Saturday afternoon (Oct. 14), the Aquinas women's swim and dive team made its way to the Elkhart Aquatic Center to take on Bethel, Ohio Northern, and Hillsdale in a quad meet contest. The women once again prove their gusto as they head back to Grand Rapids with new records under their belts. But the ladies in maroon would not be able to pull out an overall win on the day falling by scores of 145-138, 218-59, 220-66. AQ is now 1-3 on the season.
The 200 medley relay of
Amelia Edens,
Kennedy Pierce,
Claire Hines and
Chloe Boivin set another school record, placing fourth overall with a time of 1:55.18.
Edens finished fourth in the 200 freestyle with a 2:00.25, narrowly missing a school record but clinching an NAIA provisional time standard.
Pierce and Boivin led the sprint freestyle events for the Saints, finishing in fourth (25.85) and fifth (25.91) respectively.
Edens stunned the competition in the 200 backstroke, shattering the school record she set at the first meet of the season by nearly two seconds. She finished third overall with a 2:12.99, claiming yet another NAIA provisional time standard.
Pierce claimed the school record in the 200 breaststroke, finishing with a 2:51.71.
Sophomore captain
Sarah Colvin qualified for the NAIA national meet on the 1M springboard with the score of 181.10, finishing in second place.
Colvin finished third on the 3M springboard, racking up valuable points for the women's team.
The 200 freestyle relay of Hines, Pierce, Boivin and Edens finished third overall and set a new school record with a 1:43.03.
Coach Kristen Hepp had this to say about todays performance, "It was great to compete at the Elkhart Aquatic Center today, because it's a fast pool and will be the host of our KCAC championship meet in February. The athletes had the opportunity to adjust to the facility and compete against one of our biggest rivals in the conference - Bethel University. It's also rare to be able to compete against an NAIA, NCAA DII and NCAA DIII team in one meet, so we were exposed to some great competition today. I'm very proud of how our divers performed, and they'll play a pivotal role in the final standings at the end of the season. All three divers - Evan Bennet, Troy Borrero, and
Sarah Colvin - have qualified for the national meet in Georgia in March.
We also continue to set new school records and claim provisional time standards, so we're moving in the right direction. As we head into fall break next week, we'll have a tough lineup with back-to-back meets at Saginaw Valley State University and Kalamazoo College. We typically have breakout swims by the end of this training block, so you can expect much more out of our teams in these next few weeks."
Aquinas may be on fall break but the swim and dive team's work is still not finished, as the ladies will be back in action on Friday (Oct. 20) with a head-to-head against Saginaw Valley State. The contest will be held at the SVSU Natatorium.
