Fort Wayne, Ind. — The No. 8-ranked Aquinas women's soccer team did their part on Saturday (Oct. 28) with a 4-0 road win over Indiana Tech to close out the regular season. But, so did the other Saints at Siena Heights. SHU escaped with a 2-1 win at Cleary to have both the Saints in the WHAC finish on 29 points and be crowned co-champions of the regular season.
It's the fourth straight WHAC regular season championship for the Aquinas Saints (2023, 2022, 2021, 2020) and the seventh in the program's history.
However, Aquinas (14-0-3, 9-0-2 WHAC) won't enter the upcoming WHAC Tournament as the No. 1 seed despite not giving up a single goal in conference play this season. That honor will go to Siena Heights because of the following tiebreaker: head-to-head record against highest finishing team down through last place team or until tie is broken. Siena Heights beat third-place UNOH, 2-1, while Aquinas drew with UNOH, 0-0.
AQ didn't let any of that faze them on Saturday and completely shut down Indiana Tech from start to finish. The Saints scored twice in each half and outshot the Warriors, 25-1 (12-1 shots on target).
Six different Saints picked up a point with AQ having four different goal scorers.
Ariana Garcia opened the scoring in the 31st minute with her second goal this season. Her first goal came on Sept. 23 against Concordia.
Macy Hollingsworth doubled the Saints lead in the 43rd minute with
Emily Gignac and
Laia Cunill picking up assists.
Aquinas closed out the contest with goals from
Sandra Segovia (72nd minute) and
Brittney Probst (76th minute) in the second half. The Warriors only shot of the game came less than a minute after Probst scored.
Segovia, Garcia and Probst all had three shots on goal for AQ.
Aquinas sophomore goalkeeper
Kayla Shuk made one save for her 13th shutout this season — tying her own school single-season record that she set last year.
The Saints are waiting to see who they will face in the first round of the WHAC Tournament. That quarterfinals game will be played on Wednesday (Nov. 1) at the AQ Athletic Field. Time has yet to be determined.
