#4 Saints Secure 4-0 Win over Warriors to Hold WHAC Top Spot

The AQ women's soccer team scored three times in the second half to put the conference contest away

Grand Rapids, Mich. — The No. 4-ranked Aquinas women's soccer team fittingly scored four goals to upend the Rochester Warriors, 4-0, on Tuesday evening (Oct. 3) at the AQ Athletic Field.

With the win, the Saints (9-0-1, 4-0 WHAC) remain the only team unblemished in conference play. The Warriors dropped to 9-2 overall (3-1 WHAC). AQ is unbeaten in their last 43 regular season WHAC games with a 42-0-1 record dating back to 2019.

The first goal on Tuesday didn't come until late into the first half with 1:01 left on the scoreboard.

Standing over a free kick outside the 18-yard box on the far left side, AQ senior forward Laia Cunill surveyed her options. She had plenty of heads to aim for crashing the net, but instead her free kick kept curving left and caught the Rochester goalkeeper out of place. The ball found the far right corner of the goal for Cunill's fourth goal of the season.

The Saints happily took the 1-0 lead into the locker room after finally breaking down the Warriors defense.

Aquinas, wearing pink jerseys for the first time this season in support Breast Cancer Awareness Month, continued to dominate possession in the second half and were rewarded with three more goals.

Sydney Shenk set Maeva Lichtensteiger up for AQ's second goal in the 59th minute. Lichtensteiger one-timed Shenk's cross off the left post and in. It was her sixth goal of the season.

From scorer to provided, Lichtensteiger sprung Brittney Probst free in the 67th minute with a direct pass through the middle of the field. Probst finished her second of the year to put the Saints up 3-0.

Aquinas added one more insurance goal with 10 seconds left when Emily Gignac quickly played a free kick and found Shenk in the middle of the box for an uncontested side-footed volley into the back of the net. It was Shenk's WHAC-leading ninth goal of the season and the first career assist for freshman Gignac.

The Saints outshot the Warriors 31-3 (17-2 shots on target) to pick up their ninth win in a row.

The AQ defense once again looked impenetrable. Sophomore goalkeeper Kayla Shuk had to make one difficult save on a free kick that was taken from near midfield from Sammi Springer. Shuk backpedaled and punch the ball over the top of the crossbar to keep her clean sheet intact.

Shuk picked up her eighth shutout the season behind a defense — spearheaded by Ingrid Hentemann, Avery Tack, Bridget Sherman and Olivia Bowling — that hasn't allowed a goal in 656 minutes of game time.

Aquinas looks to add 90 more minutes to that streak this Saturday (Oct. 7) at home against (RV) UNOH. The women will play at noon with the men's soccer team to follow at 3 p.m. for a conference doubleheader at the AQ Athletic Field.
