Two-Goal Lead Not Enough For Saints in Loss at LTU

The Saints were unable to hang on for a road victory

Farmington Hills, Mich. — The dreaded two-goal lead curse got the better of the Aquinas men's hockey team Friday night (Nov. 3) on the road against Lawrence Tech. The Saints (4-10, 2-5 WHAC) dropped a 6-4 decision against the Blue Devils (5-6, 5-4 WHAC) after holding a 2-0 lead through the first 20 minutes and then a 4-2 lead after 40 minutes.

It's the second straight game AQ has lost 6-4 after suffering the same scoreline defeat last week to No. 23-ranked Davenport on Oct. 27.

AQ freshman Ben Cesario opened the scoring five minutes into the contest with his second goal of the season. Logan Wesolek and Christian Look picked up the assists. Shortly after, the Saints doubled up on a goal by Mitchell Hoon, assisted by Xavier Erickson. That's how things stood going into the first intermission with Aquinas up 2-0.

Both teams canceled each other with two goals each in the middle frame. Erickson and Dylan Rumpke each scored for the Saints, while the following AQ skaters earned assists: Hoon, Austin Gilmore, Look and Brandon Rozema.

As the old adage goes, the most dangerous lead in hockey is a two-goal lead. LTU scored four unanswered goals in the third period to escape with a 6-4 home victory. Drake Barnish scored a power-play, empty-net goal to seal the come-from-behind victory. Brenden Preiss led all skaters with three points, scoring two goals and adding an assist for the Blue Devils.

Lawrence Tech outshot Aquinas 32-25. AQ netminder Max Johnston made 26 saves in the defeat.

The Saints have lost six straight games and will look to snap the streak in a home rematch against Lawrence Tech on Saturday night (Nov. 4) inside the Southside Ice Arena. Puck drop is set for 7:30 p.m.
