Men's Track and Field Captures Two Conference Titles on Day 1 of WHAC Championships

Fort Wayne, Indiana -
This afternoon the men's track and field team began competition on Day 1 of the WHAC Indoor Championships hosted by Indiana Tech. The men head into the second day of competition sitting third out of eight teams after winning the 4 x 800 Meter Relay and the 5,000 Meter Run.  
 
Indiana Tech leads the conference meet currently with 77 points compared to AQ's 50. Cornerstone sits in second with 62 points while Madonna (35) and Siena Heights (25) round out the top five.
 
The first running final to step on the track was the 4 x 800 Meter Relay. The team of Rob Lohr, Will Finch, Zander Masten, and Caleb Hodgkinson ran their way to the victory behind a time of 7:50. They bested the second place team by nearly three seconds. The quartet also hits an automatic qualifier behind this performance.
 
The next final to hit the track was the 5K. The Saints dominated in the race as they occupied the top four spots earning 29 points. Connor Callahan captured the conference title with a time of 15:19. Then the trio of Andrew Ireland, Ethan Barker, and Matthew Schieber crossed the line together at 15:31 to earn AQ valuable points.
 
The 60 Hurdles kicked off track events today with Jake Van Tassell representing Aquinas. Van Tassell finished sixth in the preliminaries to qualify for tomorrow's final. With his time of 8.44 he now ranks third on Aquinas' all-time list.

On the field events side, Jesunifemi Ojutalayo was able to score in both the long and high jump. In the long jump, he scored five points by placing fourth with a jump of 6.93 meters. Then in the high jump he took seventh place earning two points. He did so with a height of 6-3¼"
 
The final points today came from freshman Emmanuel Farage in the pole vault earning 4 points while taking fifth. He did so behind a height of 3.70 meters
 
The Saints return to the Doug Edgar Indoor Track tomorrow for the second and final day of the conference meet. Events kick off on the track with the 60 Meter Hurdle Final and on the field with the Women's Triple Jump Final at 1:00 PM.
