Saints Dominate Cornerstone, Sweep Season Series From Golden Eagles

AQ earns first regular season sweep of crosstown rivals since 2007-08

Grand Rapids, Mich. - The Aquinas men's basketball team led by as many as 25 points in Saturday's (Feb. 4) road rivalry contest against crosstown foe Cornerstone, spoiling Senior Day for the Golden Eagles in a decisive 68-49 victory. Coupled with AQ's 76-74 home win over CU on Jan. 7, the Saints earned the first regular season sweep over their rivals since the 2007-08 season.

The statement victory for Aquinas pushed the Saints to 10-13 on the season and 6-10 in WHAC action. Cornerstone falls to 15-10 overall and 9-8 in league play. AQ handed the Golden Eagles their second-largest loss of the season, topped only by a 21-point loss to #14 Indiana Tech in November.

Credit goes to the Aquinas defense, which held Cornerstone below the 50-point mark for the first time since the 2019-20 season at Rochester. The Golden Eagles shot just 31.0 percent from the field on Saturday and AQ held Cornerstone to 2-for-20 shooting from three-point range.

On the other end of the floor, Aquinas made 45.2 percent of its shots, drained nine triples, and had three double-digit scorers. Gabe Overway posted a big double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds, leading AQ to a 39-30 advantage on the glass. Overway shot 8-of-15 from the field and added three assists and a pair of blocked shots.

Donovan Brown-Boyd scored nine of his 15 points in the second half, when AQ outscored the home Golden Eagles 30-18. He was 5-for-11 from the field, made a pair of trifectas, and totaled eight boards and two steals. Devon Boyd also reached double figures with 11 points, five rebounds, and four assists. He scored all 11 points in the first half and finished 3-for-4 from long distance.

A tight first half saw Aquinas pull in front by as many as eight points before Cornerstone tied the score at 31-all with 2:45 remaining. The Saints sandwiched two Overway layups around a Boyd trifecta to finish the half on a 7-0 run and take a 38-31 advantage to halftime.

Cornerstone didn't get closer than five points in the second half and AQ made the game-changing run starting around the nine-minute mark. It was 47-39 in the Saints' favor when Kaleb Mitchelson buried a three-pointer with 8:51 remaining to start a 13-0 run. Brown-Boyd made a pair of layups, Overway added a bucket, and Tommy Gregwer drilled a three-pointer to give Aquinas complete control.

With six minutes remaining, the Aquinas lead was 60-39. Back-to-back three-pointers from Payton Harley and Brown-Boyd gave the visitors their largest lead of the game (66-41) with two minutes to go, putting the game out of reach.

Six Saints buried three-pointers, including three from Boyd and two more from Brown-Boyd. Menalito McGee scored seven points, Nick Henry added six points and three rebounds in just nine minutes, and Harley tallied five points, a game-high five assists, and four boards. Gregwer also added five points and two assists.

AQ last topped the Golden Eagles twice in 2008-09, but the second of those victories was in postseason play. The aforementioned 2007-08 regular season sweep capped a five-game winning streak in the rivalry for Aquinas over Cornerstone.

Three of Aquinas' last four regular season games are on the road, including Wednesday's (Feb. 8) tilt at UM-Dearborn. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., as the Saints look for another regular season sweep after beating the Wolverines 70-61 in the Sturrus Center on Dec. 10, 2022.
