Saints Capture Much-Needed Win at UM-Dearborn

Donovan Brown-Boyd, Gabe Overway both reach the 20-point plateau in 72-61 road win

Dearborn, Michigan — The Aquinas men's basketball team knocked down 11 3-pointers with freshman forward Donovan Brown-Boyd hitting four, and senior forward Gabe Overway went to work down low with an 8-for-13 shooting performance from mostly around the rim.

The inside-outside game was too much for conference foe UM-Dearborn to handle Wednesday evening (Feb. 8) as the Saints (11-13, 7-10 WHAC) picked up a 72-61 road win over a desperate Wolverines' squad that has now lost eight straight (4-22, 1-17 WHAC).

Brown-Boyd and Overway each finished with eye-catching double-doubles. Brown-Boyd set a new career-high with 21 points and added 11 rebounds, while Overway chipped in 20 points with 12 rebounds for his sixth double-double this season.

Not to be overshadowed, AQ guard Ryan Weir also set a new career-high with 11 points on 3-for-5 shooting from behind the arc and two made free throws. He also had no turnovers in roughly 22 minutes of game time.

Both teams struggled to form any sort of gap throughout most of the first half. The score was last tied at 28-28 with a little over two and a half minutes to play before halftime.

The Saints went on a quick 10-3 run, but only led by five points at the break after Maurice Anderson hit a jumper before the buzzer to cut AQ's advantage down to five points, 38-33.

Anderson ended up leading all scorers with 24 points on 9-for-21 shooting and pulling down eight rebounds. Two other Wolverines finished with 10 points: Troy Campbell and Thomas Dillard IV.

In the second half, the Saints maintained a 5- to 12-point cushion over UM-Dearborn. AQ kept the Wolverines' dribble-drive offense in check and hit run-breaking shots whenever UM-Dearborn started to get a little too close for comfort.

Aquinas shot 42.1% from the floor and 37.9% from deep, while holding the Wolverines to a 36.2 shooting percentage and 21.1% on 3-pointers.

The Saints dominated the glass with 45 rebounds (12 offensive) compared to UM-Dearborn's 27 boards.

The 21 points scored by Brown-Boyd tied AQ's individual season-high, matching the efforts of Menalito McGee against Siena Heights on Nov. 12 and Overway against Lourdes on Jan. 25.

Next up, Aquinas hosts No. 8-ranked Indiana Tech on Saturday (Feb.11). The Saints will also be celebrating Senior Day with tipoff at 3 p.m.
