Brookings, S.D. — The Aquinas men's indoor track and field team wrapped up the 58th annual NAIA Men's Indoor Track & Field National Championships on Saturday (Mar. 4) at the Sanford Jackrabbit Athletic Complex in Brookings, S.D. The Saints had two student-athletes compete on the last day of the three-day competition: Freshman
Nathan Iacona in the 400 meter dash and sophomore
Jesunifemi Ojutalayo in the triple jump.
As a team, the Saints placed tied for 37th after earning seven points. Three of those points were earned in the 4x800 relay finals held on Friday (Mar. 3) when sophomore
Rob Lohr, sophomore
Zander Masten, junior
Caleb Hodgkinson and senior
Will Finch ran a 7:44.70, which was good enough for sixth place.
Iacona went one spot better on Saturday by snagging a fifth place finish in the 400 with a time of 47.82 seconds. It was fractions of a second short of the new AQ school-record Iacona set on Friday in the preliminary round with a time of 47.69 seconds. Iacona was the fastest freshman to reach the final of the event.
Ojutalayo didn't quite have the same success in the triple jump, as he wasn't able to register a distance and eventually fouled out of competition.
The Saints now begin to prepare for the warmer outdoor season and attempting to qualify for the 2023 NAIA Outdoor National Championships being held May 24-26 at Indiana Wesleyan.
